AlphaQBBS Version 6.0 (Gamma 6.01) Changes Document
===================================================
Version 6.0 of AlphaQBBS is both a maintenance release and a
features update. You will find that the program is much larger
than the previous versions. Do not be alarmed. At the same time,
the overall package size has shrunk, and there are fewer included
files.
Version 6.0 is backwardly compatible with Version 5.0's control
file. It will not be necessary to re-edit a new AlphQBBS.SYS
file.
* An excellent Setup program has been incorporated into
AlphaQBBS. There is no longer any need to run an external setup
program or use and ascii editor.
To invoke the new editor feature, start AlphaQBBS up as
follows:
AlphQBBS SETUP
The Setup Program is easy to use and shouldn't need much expla-
nation. In any event, please refer to the coming update to the
documents.
One more note on the setup facility. If you wish to specify a
different name for the control file, use the -C parameter as
such:
AlphQBBS SETUP -C[FileName.EXT]
The setup routines will then save the control information under
the title you choose.
* A bug existed that could identify a files.bbs as being
corrupted. If in the files.bbs, a file name existed that was 12
characters long (Name + "." + EXT) and the description that
follows had two or more spaces before it, AlphQBBS would ident-
ify that files.BBS as corrupt. This small bug has been
repaired.
* Minor changes were made in the determination of valid file
names in the files.bbs.
* A -C command line parameter was added to allow usage of
different control files! This is probably the best change in
AlphaQBBS. Usage could be as such:
AlphQBBS -CQuickBBS.CTL
QuickBBS.CTL would be an alternate control file that would list
different directories that the main control file would not.
This is useful if you wish to compile a list of just one area,
perhaps one of limited access, such as Adult access files.
* A -X command line parameter has been added to allow canceling
of file compilation. The only use for this is if you only wish
to sort the files.bbs and not make a listing. This could be
very useful during manual file area maintenance.
* This version of AlphaQBBS now thanks you for using it.
* A -P command line parameter has been added. When used,
AlphaQBBS will attempt to provide either PAKed or ARCIVED file
compilations. -P Has two forms as shown:
-P1 - Use the PAK v1.6 meathod of file compression
-P2 - Use Phil Katz's PKARC v3.5 meathod of file compression
If -P1 is used, PAK.EXE must either exist in the same directory
as AlphaQBBS or be listed in a DOS PATH statement.
If -P2 is used, PKARC.EXE must either exist in the same direc-
tory as AlphaQBBS or be listed in a DOS PATH statement.
* The -3 command line option display has been repaired. Long file
Pathways are cleared from the display, before a shorter pathway
display is made. This definitely cleans up the display.
* A -Q command line parameter has been added. A -Q allows you to
specify in what directory the compiled files listings and com-
pressed files listing will go. An example:
AlphQBBS -3 -QD:\files\area1\
Note that the trailing backslash is required! This should save
batch file copying and deleting.
Well all in all the changes should be welcomed. Batch file
operation of AlphQBBS is now very much simpler. Study the above
changes. The above changes can be used separately or combined
together in many different ways to produced a truly custom files
area on your BBS.
